Bat Ray | Myliobatis californica
Bat Rays love to burrow under the sand with just their eyes exposed. When divers come by the often explode in a billowing cloud. They do have stingers in their tails, but the only people I have ever heard getting stung by them are beach combers who accidentally step on them in the surf. The sting is painful but not dangerous. This one is quite large. he is about 5 ft across and 6-8 ft long. I love his blue eye, and the way his back is still covered with sand.
